Shifting to the Next Generation Science Standards
Welcome! This website was created for teachers who are trying to shift teaching and learning in their classrooms to meet the vision presented in A Framework for K-12 Science Education using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This transition began in some classrooms several years ago while others are just beginning their journey. Each teacher, school district, and State are doing things a bit differently, but the mission and vision remains the same.
As a science education community, we are shifting science teaching and learning more towards the Sense-Making Frame. We are requiring students to do more of the heavy cognitive lifting while they try to figure out scientific explanations of phenomena or design engineering solutions to problems. In this vision, all students are engaged in three-dimensional learning which requires them to use Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) while trying to develop a scientific understanding using grade specific Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) and Cross Cutting Concepts (CCCs) to help organize their thinking.

This website was developed to help teachers who are transitioning to the high school Next Generation Science Standards. It is a sister website to msngss.weebly.com where my blog post can be found Coaching with Cari.
